Remember When

Remember when we were little?
We used to draw rainbows
And unicorns with wings;
Things that existed to us then.
Boys had cooties
and we all had our cootie shots
so we never had to worry.

Remember when we were little?
We'd pick dandelions
To give to our moms.
Although they were weeds
She would love them like roses
Because our tiny hands did the work.
And she'd put it right on the table.

Remember when we were little?
We would play with our dolls.
And Tommy from next door would come over.
He'd pull the heads off of our dolls.
And we'd have to play pirates instead
and he'd push you down and make you cry.

Remember when we were little?
And when Tommy from next door would make you cry
I'd hold your hand and bring you home
and your mom would kiss where it hurt
and she'd say "There, all better"
and everything would be all better.

We're not little anymore.
Now we don't play with dolls
And boys don't have cooties
The dandelions have long ago withered and died
And now when Tommy from next door pushes you down
you won't tell anyone, because you say you love him
and your mom can't kiss where it hurts
because it hurts in your heart.
